I have been there! Last Friday I was in San Francisco.
We – that is nine people (seven girls!)- from the US, Czech Republic, Spain, Germany and other countries I don’t remember – rented a van (with seven seats) and started our journey on Friday morning at eight. Because of the limited space, we two boys rotational occupied the comfy thron in the trunk. The build-in DVD-player entertained us during the ride and from time to time I felt asleep, because I had some beers with my Mexican neighbor the night before and was a bit tired and dizzy. We finally arrived at 10 a.m. at our first destination:
The view point at the beginning of the bay area, where we made some stupid tourist pictures and enjoyed the view.
Our second stop was the in the Berkley quarter. A place full of hippies, alternative people, homeless (like everywhere), music shops, graffiti and weird folks on the streets that want to sell you something. We were standing walking on the sidewalk when a small teenager on his skateboard asked us if we wanted to buy some weed … that’s how it is; I think we looked like tourists. Thanks to the girls we spent most of the time in the clothing stores, where they forced me to buy some T-shirts.
We went on to the famous Ashbury and Haight Street, had our lunch (extra cheesy pizza) and admired all the curiosities and again had a deeper look into all the clothing stores…
Somewhere in SF there is a small hill, from where you have a great view over the city. We went there. Funny: every time we left the car (remember nine people) we attracted all the attention, I wonder why.
Pier 39: A perfect tourist trap. You can buy things there you don’t want to buy, see things you don’t want to see and spend money you don’t want to spend and so on. Great view on Alcatraz…
Somehow San Francisco is the most European city I have seen here until now. I don’t know why, but I liked it there. It semmed more grown than planned; it’s not a car city (not as much as Sacramento). With its many pedestrians on the sidewalk, it is alternative cityscape and it’s small crazy shops it remembered me very much of my German hometown Tübingen (as you see my keyboard is working again).
