I just realized that I am spending less money to fly return to Rome than I would’ve paid to visit my cousin in Frankfurt for the day. I am sitting here drinking my coffee (Hurray for stolen Christmas gifts!!) checking out blogs, and thinking Rian will be here for one day next week on her way to Cape Town and it’s too bad it would’ve been 80 euro return to go see her. For 55 I am flying to Rome. Same with every other country Ive been in. Fly to Tokyo for 120 or take the train for 300. Fly to Glasgow for 50 quid or take the train for your first born child.

My mother is again rather freaked out. Maybe I have her shell shocked. My first time out of the country was on a summer study program in Russia. My mother envisioned me eating cabbage soup while I waited for for Chechnyan rebels to execute me. (I dont know why they’d waste their food on me, or for that matter why they’d have me in the first place, but I guess it made the better picture. Or maybe it was due to my father ranting on about how all I would eat all summer was said soup. However upon cooking it for me in an effort to dissuade his baby girl from spending her summer with former communists we both found out we loved it.)

In fairness, that summer a bomb went off in the Moscow subway 10 minutes after we left it. BUT the point is I have traveled around the world and as of yet all has been good. And it’s really all about luck. All the freaking out when I announced I was going to Turkey because of the terrorists was more funny than real. Terrorism is actually the furthest thing from most people in Istanbul’s minds. But then when we look at how many tourists are killed in London due to car accidents last year versus how many died in bomb attacks the past 5 years in Turkey, well despite the odds saying don’t leave your house ever because cars are death machines, I mean really, who is afraid of cars? And again my mother is anxious because I am going to Rome. Well asides from some bum pinching I think all will be safe and good. But then depending on my mood who knows. Said bum pinch may result in the destruction of Rome. ;) Maybe my mother is in fact more afraid of what I will do to others verus what they will do to me.

Point being I spent today again creatively translating Fernweh. I am actually translating Leonie’s (Patrick’s sister) emails from China. Leonie decided that she would buy a bike and peddle back to Beijing by herself. Now mother, at least I have never done that. ;) After several days and 60 kilometers away from the city she decides thats it, shes beat and can’t continue. (Spicy by the way is the pedal bike). ;)

There I stood with the tire in one hand and with the basket in the other hand. I had even forgotten to call out a curse to the bus as it sped away. Surely they could not have left me standing in the middle of nowhere, after they had taken Spicy apart?!”

Hee hee, no worries, a kind man stops with his car and she makes it safe to Beijing!

Rome was awesome, but I have no idea how to tell you about it other than I met an Italian who really loves the U.S., and a Brit that really loves Cambodia, and together they made for excellent tour guides of the city.
