Greece!

Today was mostly a day of driving. After the terror of the day before we slept in for a late start and headed towards the Greek border, only to cross over on a Sunday, where nothing was open and we had no food! We had to head towards the city of Alexandropoli, only to find that even here most things are closed! Finally we eat and for the sake of simplicity we head to the Municipal camping as it is already past 6 30 and it gets dark here at about 7 30.
Welcome back to the EU! 20 Euros for CAMPING! The night before we had a 4 star hotel for almost the same price, and that came with breakfast! We have a budget of 30 Euro a day, and even with the gas prices in Turkey we have been safe within this. Some days were 35, but then some were only 20 or 25. So we hightailed it out of there, and as it became too dark to see we pulled off road and camped in an olive groove.

If we had slept in 15 minutes more than we did we would have been gassed with cancer. We woke up to a lovely morning, packed everything together, and noticed my chain oiler was empty, we had just finished up when we saw the tractor coming, the farmer in a gas mask, and a giant cloud of gas being spewed behind him. Normally we always ask, but last night there was no one around, and it had become so late. Needless to say we took off pretty fast. :P
The day was spent pulling into gas stations searching for a decent map of Greece. No where seemed to have one. Until that night when we set up camp and Patrick pulled out the map of Albania to find the map of Greece we had bought with the last of out Bulgarian change.
hee hee whoops.
This time we camped in a no mans land, and it was perfect. No angry toxic spewing farmers to be found. ;)

First stop was Thessaloniki to get my bike fixed. We found that both bikes had a slight catch in the turning. We noticed it on my mind after we left Ankara, but Patrick´s we noticed before. Patrick was pretty sure it was going to have to be replaced, as once the bearing had created a groove there was nothing to be done. The BMW mechanic however insisted he could fix it with a minor alternation.
So we headed to Nino´s TechnoShop to get mine fixed as well, and as nice as it was that the BMW mechanic did not charge labor and parts to replace it, it also went to support Patrick´s theory that its best to avoid official dealers while on the road (we only went because we figured it was leaking too much to make it safely to Nino´s Technoshop anyway). George checked it out, and was only too willing to grease it so that we could make it back to Germany and have it repaired there (and when I am working again and not living off savings for the trip!), but the first thing he said was the exact same thing Patrick had thought. When the damage has occurred, its done. We fix it now, or we patch it for another thousand kilometers. But either way we need to replace it.
But the price was so much better than the BMW dealers for a better job. Joscha and Ed were lucky to have found him, and I am so glad they recommended him to us. An Enduro driver himself, he was only too happy to take our map of Greece and give us the best roads and recommendations for our drive through Greece and into Albania. It was worth the drive through the hot busy city just for the recommendations he offered, because I ended up falling in love with Greece on the drive from Mt. Olympus to the Albanian border.

Mt. Nemrut was fantastic and amazing, but I never learned about it until I was older. Mt. Olympus however was part of the mythology I was familiar with growing up. (Again my Turkish readers turn from me, Sorry!!!!) :) And so the trip was again something new and exciting, especially since we had put our road kilometers behind us. Again we could slow down and enjoy, and the road marked for us by George had turned out to be everything he had said and more. I can now say I camped on Mt. Olympus, even if I never drove my bike to the top like he did! (I am not so sure many other people can make the same claim, but he has pictures to prove it). :)

Last night as we drove up through Olympus we heard an inhumane screeching. Then this little puppy comes barreling around the corner to collapse next to my bike. We finished our break and continued driving, only to have him rejoin us 5 minutes into the next break. On the way back down however he lost us again. I heard him crying, but couldn’t find him.

This puppy was not a stray dog. He was too clean for one thing. The other was he was polite. He took the bread I offered him daintily, and the thought of being alone stressed him out a little too much.

And so we knew what we had to do, we had to rescue him.
The problem was how. So we put him in Patrick’s lap and he started off down the mountain.

I wish the story had a wonderful ending. But it doesn’t. But no we did not run over the dog. However when Patrick geared up to second gear he freaked out and jumped off. :( He was fine, but he only followed us so much further before laying down in the bushes as if to say I am a loved spoiled prince. STOP making me chase you already and just love me the way I deserve.
We found a box and went back for him but he was gone by the time we got back. :(

We camped again on the mountain, only the other side. We asked a Sheppard and he said no problem, we did however find some condom wrappers and – ugh- disposed contents as well in the area. We kicked them further away. ugh ugh.
But I wonder if that is what the crazed madman had in mind when he woke me up and frightened the shit out of both of us when he roared down the little deserted path we were on. The road went nowhere, and out of nowhere he heard a pick up truck coming at us at about 70 kms an hour on this little dirt path. The guy screeches to a halt, sees us, ignores Patrick, and drives away again.
Suspicious of who was down there?
This is the road:

They say that cleanliness is next to godliness, however when you are on a budget of 30 Euro a day with gas you try to camp wild as much as possible. Add to that you tend to wear the same outside gear every day. Toss in then that we travel through hot countries, and you have some stinky bikers. :P
So today we stopped at a spring, slipped into our swim suits, and pulled out the shampoo. Beats paying 40 Euro for a cheap hotel!

Greece is proving to be a bikers paradise. This is the first time since we left Germany that I have seen so many big bikes, and maybe the first time I have ever seen more in one place. Everyone seems to drive at least a 650, and given the scenery they have (and the well kept roads!) I dont blame them!

We drove this morning to Meteora, monasteries on top of giant rocks. How they managed to build them in the first place I have no idea, but the result is nothing short of amazing. We thought about going in, but truthfully we enjoyed the outside and the drive so much we didn’t feel like filing in behind the hordes spewing out of the buses (and who were frantically trying to snap pictures from the bus as they drove around, LOVE my bike). ;)
