Sarajevo

We took the main road out of Montenegro and it was still a beautiful little mountain road. Sadly I did not enjoy it as much as I could have strictly because we seemed to have skipped Fall somewhere in Albania and moved directly into winter. I have never so fervently wished for grip heating in my life, and knowing that I had it until Turkey made me envious of myself. To never use it and now to need it!

And so we decided that we had to make it to Sarajevo and check into a hotel.

And we were successful. And Sarajevo has proved to be this beautiful little big city. It has an old town that has a little village nestled in the hills above it. Money is pouring in, as is evidenced by the brand new Porsche building and all the upscale shops that you find in any of the bigger cities of Europe. The evidence of the war remains however, as next to a restored building you will see one that has yet to be renovated – and its riddled with bullet holes. Yet they tend to be on the outskirts of city center, and its difficult to believe that just 13 years ago they were being hit with 300 bombs a day on average.

Its sobering.

And the history geek in me demanded that my 365 picture yesterday be taken by the bridge where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, given the excuse to begin a world war.

But this morning we woke up to – you guessed it, RAIN! And after 10 degrees and FREEZING yesterday we have decided to stay in the city one more day, and then begin hightailing it to Switzerland. Which means the fastest way possible through Croatia, so we wont even stop, just cross the borders as fast as possible to get into Slovenia. The weather is no longer on our side, and unless it changes it makes no sense being holed up in hotels because its too cold to enjoy what we came on this trip to do!

You know what it is like to perpetually smell like burnt gasoline, or dirt under your fingernails from tires that refuse to keep their proper shape and pressure. Flies in your face, either too hot or too cold, but you refuse to submit to that fate of
