Dont Mess With Old Ladies
16. Février 2008 | en
I have now made a vow to travel less by plane and much more by motorcycle . You become so quickly spoiled by the sheer freedom that when you do travel again as a backpacker you want to rip your hair out at the limited possibilities. (What? follow a bus or train schedule? are you mad??? I want to stop here, and go there, and the drivers just IGNORE you!).
However, it does mean you miss out on the crazy people who populate trains. I went to Slovenia for the day and this old lady across from me kept trying to speak to me in Croatian. I had no sweet clue what she was actually saying to me. When the border guy came around she wanted to peak at my passport. She kept saying âSlovenian?â âMacedonian?â over and over. I kept correcting her, telling her I was Canadian. âSee CANADA, Canadian.â But she would only grin and shake her head at me like I couldnât fool her. Then she squawks âMacedonianâ and proceeds to whack me on the arm no less than 3 times! I really began to wonder if she figured I was trying to pull one over on her. yes your right, fake passport. hahahaha. Please dont beat me up! But thatâll teach me for dying my hair black and heading to Croatia.
However she never ended there. In addition to assuming to my nationality, she also assumed to share my water. Because when a lady joined us and asked if we had any water she whacked me again and pointed to the new lady and then at my bag. She ratted out my small bottle of water! And the woman took it and drank it, needless to say I never had any more water to Slovenia. But the entire train ride was so beautiful that I didnt mind. All I could about was how awesome the riding would be there !!!

The ride through the rain continued. We woke up and headed straight to Croatia, or a 15 minute drive. ;) We had planned to visit a national park, and enjoy the ride. However as we sat drinking our morning coffee watching the rain alternate with drizzle we knew the trip was coming to an end. It had been raining since our second day in Albania. Although Montenegro gave us a slight reprieve, the rain was back with a vengeance. Enough to make riding uncomfortable, and camping next to impossible. (Its one thing when the tent is up and it rains, its another setting it up and suffering inside the tent with everything wet.) So we crossed the border and headed straight to Slovenia with no time spent in Croatia.
When we crossed the border however the rain stopped, completely, not even drizzle! It was still overcast, but we took advantage of some riding in Slovenia, and we gasp! even camped!
We set up in a field, we beat the rain, we settled in for a little reading before bed. All was comfy and nice. And then CLOP CLOP Cloppety KLOP and a sound that sounded a cross between a savage wild cat and a really pissed off duck.
Horny deer.
I barely slept that night from fear that they would fight and crash into our tent causing permanent hoof shaped dents where my face use to be. Patrick moved the bikes so they would crash into the bike first, but once the adrenaline was released I was awake and that was it.
