You know what it is like to perpetually smell like burnt gasoline, or dirt under your fingernails from tires that refuse to keep their proper shape and pressure. Flies in your face, either too hot or too cold, but you refuse to submit to that fate of

Internet Break! And I share My Turkish Drivers Rant

16. August 2008 | en

So we have so much material to send for the podcast that we decided we needed another internet day and we decided to check in and spend the night at a pension. Checking into a pension or hotel every couple of days gets to be our treat. We get clean and we reconnect with the world, try to be semi updated on what is happening and try to get out pictures and blogs in semi working order. I say semi because we have one computer for 2 people, both who love the internet. So the updating tends to be sporadic and the bare bones of what is happening. There is just so much to say and tell, every day is so different, and we really have no idea how it is going to work out. It is enough to say we love it, and try to get updated what we can!

There is in fact only one other hitch this trip outside of the occasional rip off artist you find. Turkish drivers, in particular the Turkish coach drivers, yes the ones with a load of tourists that they seem intent on killing. I wonder if it is as obvious in the bus as it is to those of us unfortunate enough to be on the road (and the object of the attempts at singular killings).

In most countries the lanes exist because you are expected to choose one. In Turkey they are a mere suggestion. And if you are so unlucky as to be driving within the confines of the markings of a lane and a Turkish coach driver wants to drive in the middle of both, and not just in the middle of both, but to bump you out of your proper lane, well you better be willing to give it to him, because if not he merely tries to hit you with his coach because HE is bigger and therefore you are expected to slow down and let him take over both lanes. Even though there is more than enough space in his lane for his bus, he just wont or cant use it.

It is driving me crazy. Or they cut you off (almost maiming you in the process) just to turn right 5 minutes later. Couldn’t you have waited those 5 minutes???

But other than that, it is amazing, beauitful, and so much better than going to work every morning. ;)
