Of all the random events in my life, I will put near death by lightening that diverts us to the drinking hole of some Scots, Americans and a Bulgarian (who all are building a golf course in the area) who tell us that the hotels are over priced, but if we want 5 kms up the road there is a monastery that will take us in for the night, and that we then wake that monk up, who then lets us into the little place in back that Ed has declared `uninhabitable´ to sleep for the night, as number one on my list.
But they had a hot shower. And he charged us 2.50 to stay there. Even if they had the scariest bug I have seen outside of Japan.
And we heard, even though we did not see, rats.
Either that or that bug had a large family.
But given the other choice was to go back out into that storm, where I was literally screaming every time the lightening came closer and closer, it was preferable. (this is revenge for the time I made fun of John when he thought we would die in Japan.

lightening strikes

left our grass land spot and down the mountain, into the heat, we had the luxury of coffee and breakfast at the site so we rode with out stop…eventually it got to be too much, the heat was ridiculous we all needed a break but we were not yet near a town that had a restuarant….on we rode….finally getting the break we seeked…a meal that was fit for kings and their army….we thought we could split some salads…and then we saw one guest with a cold soup…the pour waitress got confused and we ended up with four salads, four soups…that wasn’t soup according to her…yummy cold cucumber-dill, and three pizzas we were sure we would be too full to eat but managed to stuff them in in short order!!!!!!
now it was getting time for me to get a new chain on my bike and we thought that we would be able to do this in varna…on the coast..after meeting joscha’s parents and the plan was to start heading in that direction after lunch….thats when we saw the clouds….black clouds…we had only gone a short distance…we pulled over and put rain suits on…good thing…it came fast then the traffic stopped and we were sitting in the rain…this sucks….the traffic sat for may be ten minutes the rain pouring down on us….then traffic moved….and the rain fell harder and the lightening got closer…pretty soon we were obviously riding into the storm and getting closer to the lightening…what happens if lightening strikes a biker…we didn’t want to find out so we pulled into a rest stop and had coffee…ringing out the gloves ….the rain let up and we got under way but we were traveling the same direction as the storm and we were faster!!!!!we needed to find a place to stay the night and camping was not interesting to any of us….we got off the next exit!!! turned out the town we found ourselves in was without power and accommodation was expensive…took refuge in a bar and heard a table of people speaking english….a scottish couple were in town building a golf course….they were fascinated by our travel stories and told us of a monastery not far away that had bunks….off we went into the storm, hoping like hell that we could get in….when we arrived, we found a church…dead bolted from the outside…what appeared to be a storage house also dead bolted from the outside and what could have been a residence, but also dead bolted from the outside!!!! what the fuck…it seemed deserted… we all walked around in disbelief…it couldn’t be…what do we do now…..then as we contemplated riding to the next town…a hand appeared at the window…then the door opened…a hand reached thru the gate and unlocked the deadbolt….we all sighed with relief…smiles greeted our sleepy host….and we were lead to dry beds…use of a warm shower and the fire place…what a dream…...
