we departed tirana with mixed emotion, the helpfulness of matti and altin with our needs was above and beyond and we are truly greatfull for good people…...the heat was approaching it’s peak as we headed for the coast and it was a bit uncomfortable putting on all the gear…......we need to get used to that because it is only going to get hotter!!!!!!! so we rode the highway out of tirana, not your typical highway, 90km/hr but with gas station driveways all along the way and people walking across and still grazing animals…..well we made it out and had lunch after about an hour to get out of the heat, weird how i don’t notice how hungry i’m getting until i sit and eat then i feel my ravaged stomach…...onward we went to the coastal road and a stop at the internet cafe to get out of the heat again(30c) after an hour we headed for the pass, the roads were improving and the pass road was newly paved!!!!!!!!!!
we stopped for food and found a butcher who had whole lamb hanging in his cooler, i had him chop up some ribs and chops which we later had on the grill with lemon juice and herbs( is your mouth watering?!, so fucking good!!!!!!!!!)
so we cruized the pass, super cool road that went on to a new world, this is really a cool country,, travel to albania before it changes to much, it is soooooo cool,,,,from the top of the pass we could see the beach and a road and the place we wanted to spend the night!!! the beach was off the road by quite a bit and we didn’t realize until we started down the dirt road just how rough a trip it was, it was steeper than i thought and the road was big rock river wash, no wonder it was deserted…..our determination won out and we found ourselves sitting on our own beach the sun setting and a fire burning getting ready for those scrumptious lamb chops, oh the life….......
this morning we started making some calculations on our time line, the clutch repair set us back and we are still in need of tires, also we have a rendevous to keep, so with saddened heart we decided to leave albania, definitely one of the highlights of our trip so far, maybe it could be said that we finally came into our trip in albania…...i believe that…..so off to greece and thessaloniki, we crossed the border and found ioannina, thinking that we might get lucky and find tires here…..definitely we have returned to a more western feeling country, the country side poverty not as severe…..had a chance at tires but not the right size and ordering tires is a two day wait…...tomorrow we will have a big ride to thessaloniki…..........
