lets go to turkey
03. June 2008 | en
the day had come and we survived the storm, the wind was still fierce but the rain was gone and the thirsty earth was already dry…...we had a great time riding dirt today….lots of it, and we got river crossing under our belts as another new experience!!!!!oh the riding,,,,riding riding, riding, did i mention that this trip is about riding motor cycles…...and turkey….this last month has been a warm up for the next month which we will spend all of in turkey…....so we rode dirt nearly right up to the border… the crossing into turkey was the most time consuming so far….not difficult just lots of hoops….first of all i needed a visa, 15 euro at the office inside….all together there where five stops…...hell the greeks barely knew we were in the country!!!!!....so we enter turkey…first thing we see is gas stations, 3.50 turkish lira/liter, again i can’t worry about thinking in dollars but this is by far the most expensive gas in europe…...there is a bank o mat on a random corner and we get some cash before venturing into the country side…..we are not sure what tonite will bring, we want showers badly, its been three days now and we are ripe but we are headed for small towns on the coast …..we pass thru the first town, lots people in the streets, these are farming communities, hard looking people, we ride thru,......at the next town we decide we should stop and talk to someone about what we are looking for…....wide eyes and smiles….the bikes continue to fascinate….immediately we are attracking a crowd, we have not prepared any turkish phrases….unlike other countries we were able to talk in english or german and ask for the phases we wanted….not now…..no one was in a positions to help….....well, that of course is wrong, we couldn’t communicate thru words but we had the maps, ohhhhh the maps are a saving grace….point to where you are and then to were you want to go….sure to get a response and well…..i loved it….in the end we had our drinks bought for us and the direction out of town and the idea that we would find a cheap hotel in the city by the coast…..on we go… now this is a good story but it is far from over….so we find the town, yuck….we motor on…in another tiny town we ask directions again and we are pointed down the road to a restaurant were they speak german….again… or so we thought….we get to the sea….stop for a minute taking in the view, turn around and stop at one of two restaurants…..we don’t know which one to go to and we don’t want to offend anyone looking in the wrong restaurant…..joscha went in…..i’m waitng …suddenly there is a guy standing next to me asking if i’m from germany? turns out this guy, Mehmet is turkish, married to Birgit, a german…. they had arrived on the coast to their summer home a few weeks before, they saw us at the beach and decided to check it out, offered to have us stay at their place for the night, join them for dinner and take showers….their son Cenk was all smiles the whole time…..so incredible…life is a weird adventure and offers such surreal possibilities when you are open to them…....
