i arrived in baden-baden just at quiting time….met susi at the train station and followed her back to her place…..hiked up the five flights of stairs to her flat and put some beers in the frig…...just then thomas arrived home….i had not met thomas before…knew little other than the fact that he had just completed his dive instructor certificate…...so in walks this guy…...he towers over me by a head…..there is a slight hesitation on my part…..i had to recover from the sight of thomas completely filling the hall way…....this anxiety quickly melts as thomas welcomes me and we easily begin an introduction…..very relaxed guy….super interesting stories of his visits to australia…..we spent the evening bbqing on the balcony….drinking beers and telling stories…....we plan to scuba dive on sunday….another first….super cool…..strange that i had just mentioned to jannick last weekend while i was in uttwil that i had never scuba dove before and now…..im gonna dive…..amazing…..

i will breath

so…... turns out that scuba diving was harder for me than i guessed it would be…..didnt have any hesitations about the idea of scuba diving and i was looking forward to going…..but then i gear up and im standing in the water…..still a smile on my face…..when the time comes to submerge…...dive man dive….lets just sit on the bottom…..holy shit….i lost it….i mean my instinct took an abnormally strong control of my head and i got panicked i had to go back to the surface…..it was so strange…..i had to fight the normal breathing….through my nose to concentrate on breathing from my mouth only…..it was really tough…....

back to the adventure

joscha came to baden-baden, we saw susi and thomas off to the airport for their vacation…..now the two of us will complete the trip together…..back to berlin…..not yet sure of our route…..maybe thru france and holland…...???? ill let you know…...

getting the hang of it

i actually did dive…after returning to the surface to gather myself and figure a couple details….namely getting rid of the saliva build up….i felt as though i would drowned and what do i do with it…..swallowing didn’t appeal to me!!!!!....what??....so thomas gives me the pointers i need and i return to the underwater world with my regulator firmly in place!!!! i do mean firmly….my jaw ached for several days after diving…..so we decend….to the bottom…quite amazing how the mind can simply refuse to help you….i was fairly uncomfortable with the breathing…it took so much concentration….in thru the mouth, out thru the mouth…..i breath from my nose….except when i’m snoring….so i really had to think about the breathing…..that left my brain with little room for all the other efforts i should have been coordinating….like floating…..how hard can it be….lets just say that i didn’t figure it out very quickly…..i was like a sucker fish….glued to the bottom of the lake…..getting wrapped up in the grass and stirring up dirt and hanging in very cold water….the lake is spring fed…cold springs…..so i begin to feel that i have the breathing idea down….at least my panicky heart rhythm is beginning to slow….but my ability to move is….well….not as fluid as say my ideas from watching jacques cousteau…..so i am remembering the lesson…..stop, breath, think!!!!....i’m laying on the bottm….hhhmm…i’m tooo heavy…..i need to add some air to my vest…where is that thingy….finally…there you are…push the blue button…cool i hear the air filling the vest….but nothing is happening…i’m really tooo heavy…..a little more air….still nothing…a little more air….well ok not yet enough…sooo little more…..hey i’m moving up….oooohhh….ok the water is warmer and getting brighter….shit i think i’m going to…...break the surface…..hello world…..then thomas is in front of me….everything ok....yeah i just figured out that the blue button brings me up!!!!!LOL….. so everyone is now on the surface…we take a break from the underwater world…..when we return everything is easier, i now know the buoyancy control…not that it made me feel any more control, i thought i was a good swimmer, this apparently doesn’t translate into being a good diver…..20 minutes went by in a flash….and we were sitting on the beach, disassembling our gear and getting our picnic ready, i was starved….it took so much energy….then a nap…...loved it…..thanks again thomas…..
