mmmmmountains

17. May 2008 | en

OOOOKAY…....we have really come into the trip now, it is very funny that it takes a couple weeks to get it all figured out….the riding just gets more amazingall the time, i can t wait to get picture on the site you will be amazed..the croatian country side is my faavorite so far….the coast is so beautiful but you can t get away from the tourist areas, the country people are mostly farmers and very friendly, we get waved at where ever we go…. the kids have big smiles and love the motorcylces…..even the adults come and stand around the bikes and talk amongst themselves about the bikes…very entertaining….alot of people speak german so joscha is gettting alot of the personal contact…
after hitting the coast the other day we headed back to the mountains, we were riding throughsome incredible farm land and joscha was in front, out of the woods came a deer..i didn t see it until it started tumbling across the road…..it hit the other side of the road and spun back sliping on the road falling again, it was freaked out and so was joscha…..we got going again slowly….then we started to notice that the road was lined with signs, we eventually stopped to see what they were….skull and cross bones!!!!!! they were warning signs for mines!!!!!
these signs have been showing up in the weirdest places and really screwed up our wild camping…...

back to the coast

17. May 2008 | en

so the coast is warm and beautiful , quite alluring after riding thru the mountains and finding snow….it still gets pretty cold while riding at 1200 meters, the roads are so great, curve after curve, we have not been disappointed.
the bikes are truly perfect for this trip.
tonite we were thinking that we would be in this camping area by ourselves….i set uup the tent and was getting ready to start the fire when a cpmper pulled in….the whole place to chose a site and they chose too put their rv right next to our tent!!!unbelieveable…..then another camper pulled in and it was a family with two young kids, we sat by our fire all nite and shared food and wine and the next morning they invited us to have breakfast with them…..with mmmmmmmmmmmmmm coffee!!!!
we left the coast again and headed up sveti rok pass, holy shit a big pass and al gravel it had an abondoned cathedral at about two third the way uup…..incredible the ruins in this country, some having to do with the war but quite abit just because of age…....

wild camping

17. May 2008 | en

so we really wanted this trip to be about the riding and the camping, the signs, warning of mines have been a constant worry but it hasn’t stopped us from looking and we are stil managing to find some remarkable places, this place is at the back of a very long valley and steeep rock cliffs, the head waters appear as a raging river right from the base of the cliffs, so amazing!!! getting here wasn’t so easy …..getting lost on dirt trails and running into abondoned towns and then finally onto a farm were we met a farmer who spoke german and told us to go camp by the river in a meadow, it was full of wild flowers and right next to an old grave yard!!!, the trains passed by at the very edge of the canyon!!,,, soooo cool!!!!
in the morning, after packing our stuff and having a nice breakfast of bread and marmalade, and something like liverworst we set off to find the road up the other side of the valley, we thought we knew where to go but after crossing the river we ran head on into a puddle that went on as far as we could see, and since we hadn’t had any coffee yet and the idea of spending several hours drying didn’t appeal…..well thats not really all, before crossing the bridge i glanced at a fisherman on the creek and he seemed to indicate that we were headed in the wrong direction, we told him of our desired route and he packed his fishing reel and lead us to the right road!!!!! amazing people!! we followed him right thru a heard of sheep that were returning from the pasture, we had watched them from our campsite, roaming the hillside like a bunch of white specs on the incredibly lush hills….
gas is our biggest expense so far…i can t think in dollars any more because it is to depressing, so i ll give some ideas on cost in euro and you can do the math…in croatia we pay about 8.9kuna or about 1.30 euro per liter….camping is about 10 euro per nite, eating out is about 20 euro, shopping for dinner is about 14 euro…...a coffee is about the same as a beeer and comes in at 1.50euro, in short life is pretty axpensive and my budget will probably run short….will seee how the rest of the countries compare….

taking a break

17. May 2008 | en

planning on staying in baska voda for two nites and just getting a little break…..need to do laundry and bike maintenance, our bodies need a rest also…...it beats you up always concentrating on the road and it really takes everything to concentrate for that long…..especially the gravel roads…...
shared dinner last nite with a couple that are hitching from poland to turkey and back, they have been on the road for 6 weeks and are on their way back now…..we traded stories and had a nice time….....
this campsite gave us a nice change of pace and had a kitchen so we got a needed break from cooking saugage over a fire, actually i’m fairly impressed with our creativity, the other nite we baked feta on the coals and ate that roasted vegatables….mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, we aren’t suffering….............

b-day riding

19. May 2008 | en

the day started slowly, we had met the bar tender at the internet cafe where we spent our day off. getting journal entries has become a bit more time consuming than i would ideally like…..most places we have found so far are free internet when you buy drinks but most have only one machine and it gets aabit hard to sit and write fun stories when someone is staring at you waiting for the computer,...enough bitching…..the bar tender, >Ivan was super cute and quite the flirt, he knows how to work a tourist town!!!! anyway, we spent so much time in the shop that we got to know him pretty well by the days end, we invited him to join us for dinner at the campsite and he agreed. after dinner he took us to his favorite hang out to listen to some local muscians play covers of croatian folk music….rolling cigarets was the fascination of the evening…everyone rolled a cig and then showed it off….too funny, everyone smokes,,when the bar closed we went back to the camp, on the way, ivan and his friend toni showed off by walking the boats in the harbor, jumping from one to the other, they didn’t made it look graceful and my evil side was wishing one would fall in to make the story a little more interesting, no such luck!!!!! way to go Ivan and Toni!!!! the night ended at the campsite listening to croatian rap and getting the translations a line at a time, we were drunk after all!!!!
so my b-day began with a stubbed toe, it feels broken but i doubt that it is, i was walking to the grocery store to get some water and the entry was wet and i slipped, only gaining my balance with my big toe, damn that hurt…..better my toe than my head and better walking than riding!!!!! anyway it was to early, only 7am and we had only been asleep for a few hours…..luckily i wasn’t hung over, not so lucky was joscha, he was moving a little slowly…..you lnow that kind of day when everything seems to go against you!!!! that was joscha’s morning…...we did however get going eventually, riding a whole 10km to the next town, doing some shopping and looking unbelieveably for another internet cafe…....! like i said we have been having trouble withthe computers. we did actually do some ridding and as usual it was fantastic….the coastal range here is so spectacular….stark gray rock shooting straight out of the ocean, amazing that there are roads at all….so we started up the pass and came to the national park Biokovo, the road going to the peak of mount sveti jure at 1762meters, we had lunch near the summit, the road up was paved but only one lane, truly the one lane were if two cars meet some has to move back to a passing lane,
