thought we were headed to a ruin….again….instead we found ourselves in a newly dedicated nature preserve….eu funded but certainly lacking money….but it was being watched by a caretaker…surprised the hell out of us because it looked pretty deserted!!!!! we met angio and his ten year old son, svetlin, who loved having the company and hung out with us the whole time we were there….beautifully kept chapel over looking the river valley…..our first night camping with Birgit….the three of us in the tent was a tight squeeze….and it worked quite well!!!!

stop to get money and food and met some folks that were also headed to the beach…they invited us to join them and said that we could stay at the place they were working on!!!!!
had a great time at the black sea, tried palachinky, like a crepe….and spent a night with new friends eating good food….thanks monica and valerie

finally made it into romania and covering some distance, it had rained on us earlier in the day and cooled things down…we had still some distance to cover to get to birgit’s bike rental and we decided on a ‘shortcut’, rarely do short cuts work out for joscha and i but this was a very short distance and it would save lots of kms….seemed simple at first, riding thru farm fields..they were surprisingly good roads and we were moving over them quickly…then i encountered the truck…coming into a small community, the roads started to become muddy, i chose to over take this truck at the worst possible moment, big puddles, slick mud, i hit the gas a bit too hard while turning around the truck and bam, down i went….joscha and birgit were no where in sight so i got the bike standing on my own…i’m getting good at that by now….and rode to catchup…when i did, we couldn’t believe the road we were traveling…slick and getting worse…right in front of me joscha starts to swerve, thought he might get it under control but it happened so fast…he and birgit hit the ground rolling in mud…at that moment…i was down….holy shit….we got the bikes standing …this time i was unable to do it on my own because as i lifted the handle bars the front tire was sliding away from me….slick as snot….we headed the bikes for the side of the road and hoped for traction on the grass…it got us going but it was tough…finally we made it out of town and back to the farm land, unfortunately for us the road was even worse, joscha who had gone first was sliding all over the place…i chose to go across the road and into the corn field which had been cut…i was sitting on my bike across from joscha, assessing the situation…only 4km to go til we hit asphalt again….but on a road that was impossible to drive…then i noticed what was growing between joscha and i…..grass..yeah that kind …i was stunned for a moment…then, in spite of our situation, i started to smile…i called to joscha to look around, he thought i was laughing at him or something…he was pissed about our bad position, it wasn’t good but the veiw was real nice….beautiful plants lined the entire road….so coooool…i had never seen so much growing wild before…did i pick some …damn straight…hand fulls….let it dry and smoked it up…..not bad….not like cultivated bud… but hell…i wasn’t complaining….then hell returned…rode on the field for a bit….then cam to uncut fields were we had to return to the road, mud so thick that it clogged the front wheel well and stopped the tire from turning…hard to manuever a bike when your wheel isn’t turning…pulling chunks of mud and straw from my fender only lasted a few meters…we would never escape this…and the sun was going down..we talked about camping but we had no food…so we removed the fenders…well at least the tire turned now…scary hell ride out…31\2 hours later we made it the 4km!!!!...by now it is 10:30 and we have 30km to the nearest town…the bikes are a wreck…and we are wasted…but we rode on…mud shooting straight into the air from the front tire which has no fender….and hitting our face masks, blinding us….from one hell to another…new country, driving at night…blind…real smart….and going thru this community, street lined with fenced homes and each had a group of people hanging out in front…standing around drinking and many of them yelling at us…it was so intimidating….well we finally made it to a gas station and a restuarant…ate and talked to the attendant about a car wash…the bikes were so caked with mud….near 1am we got a lead to a car wash and a room to sleep…super cool..in the morning we had use of the power washer…it took three hours to clean the bikes…even had to remove the sprockett house to pull out the straw from around the chain!!!! jeeze!!!

entering romania from bulgaria can only be done by ferry…of course we didn’t know this as we passed thru the customs area…got thru customs and started to drive down a road that immediately became dirt, passed thru a fence and then ended at the river….a line of trucks and cars was the only sign that we needed to wait for the ‘boat’....birgit went to get coffee and we got in line…they waved us to the front and we honked for birgit to join us, thinking that we were getting on the boat!!! the shop told birgit one price for the coffee and then ripped her off on the exchange!!!...then they filled the barge with too many cars and we had to wait for the next one….when we made it on the next barge and got under way we were ask for our tickets!!!! tickets??? how much are tickets? 1.50 lei…whats a lei….2 lei to a euro…..so 6euro per bike…now thats some fancy math….several more conversations later….one concerning how bad people are in bucharest,,they will rob you blind…and we had to pay for the ferry…we got robbed!!!! at least he was nice about it!!!!

we should have arrived in covasna in the early afternoon…of course the mud incident made that impossible…we didn’t hit the road until 11am and we had 250km to cover….the drive was beatiful…and slow…we finally made it to covasna at 5pm, we met with a mechanic to change joscha’s brake pads and the found a welder to fix my broken box bracket…the bikes have taken a beating…these were connections of Atilla, who we rented the bike from…super cool guy…highly recommend contacting him for rentals in romania!!!!!...he even arranged for a pansion for us since it was so late….really great….

we stopped for lunch, got in some internet and let the sun go it’s hot way…then we rode up petrohan pass….nice ride up to cool air!!! we need to stay here…..wild….split up to investigate the two roads….mine lead to a radio tower at the peak of the mountain and didn’t really offer much….joscha found the gem….we rode out to where the trees ended and happened upon an old soviet style commune farm…still being lived in an operated privately….beyond the farm was a grass prairie…hilly and extending to the mountains beyond…..beautiful golden grass dancing in the breeze intermixed with wild flowers….stunning…..all we had to do was forge our own way across the meadow and up the hill…looked simple enough….and it was….so cool…biking thru knee high grass and having no problems…super…..only needed joscha and patrick to go back to the woods to gather wood for the fire while sherri and i got the tents set up!!!!!incredible nights sleep!!!!

left our grass land spot and down the mountain, into the heat, we had the luxury of coffee and breakfast at the site so we rode with out stop…eventually it got to be too much, the heat was ridiculous we all needed a break but we were not yet near a town that had a restuarant….on we rode….finally getting the break we seeked…a meal that was fit for kings and their army….we thought we could split some salads…and then we saw one guest with a cold soup…the pour waitress got confused and we ended up with four salads, four soups…that wasn’t soup according to her…yummy cold cucumber-dill, and three pizzas we were sure we would be too full to eat but managed to stuff them in in short order!!!!!!
now it was getting time for me to get a new chain on my bike and we thought that we would be able to do this in varna…on the coast..after meeting joscha’s parents and the plan was to start heading in that direction after lunch….thats when we saw the clouds….black clouds…we had only gone a short distance…we pulled over and put rain suits on…good thing…it came fast then the traffic stopped and we were sitting in the rain…this sucks….the traffic sat for may be ten minutes the rain pouring down on us….then traffic moved….and the rain fell harder and the lightening got closer…pretty soon we were obviously riding into the storm and getting closer to the lightening…what happens if lightening strikes a biker…we didn’t want to find out so we pulled into a rest stop and had coffee…ringing out the gloves ….the rain let up and we got under way but we were traveling the same direction as the storm and we were faster!!!!!we needed to find a place to stay the night and camping was not interesting to any of us….we got off the next exit!!! turned out the town we found ourselves in was without power and accommodation was expensive…took refuge in a bar and heard a table of people speaking english….a scottish couple were in town building a golf course….they were fascinated by our travel stories and told us of a monastery not far away that had bunks….off we went into the storm, hoping like hell that we could get in….when we arrived, we found a church…dead bolted from the outside…what appeared to be a storage house also dead bolted from the outside and what could have been a residence, but also dead bolted from the outside!!!! what the fuck…it seemed deserted… we all walked around in disbelief…it couldn’t be…what do we do now…..then as we contemplated riding to the next town…a hand appeared at the window…then the door opened…a hand reached thru the gate and unlocked the deadbolt….we all sighed with relief…smiles greeted our sleepy host….and we were lead to dry beds…use of a warm shower and the fire place…what a dream…...

20. Juli 2008 | en
With the excitement of the bridge behind us, it was time to continue onwards! We had camped fairly close to the Bulgarian border, and we wanted to cross over there. The plan was to make our way towards Nesbar and meet up with Joscha´s parents before heading on down to Turkey. (Plans are for breaking even more than rules are when your on trip, but whatever, now I am getting ahead of myself).
We did however make it into Bulgaria with little incident, and again managed to find a fantastic campsite. it involved a little off roading. But I figured if the boys could do the bridge, I could do some hilly grass. Plus they had already beaten a path ahead of me. I merely had to follow this path and there should be no surprises. I just had to avoid looking at Ed, who seemed to be standing in the middle of the beaten path at the top. (Whatever I look at I drive towards, this is common and normal, but I then CANT stop looking and therefore KEEP going towards it).
Turns out Ed was standing on a big rock, which was the surprise they found as they went through. Fair enough, except now that I have no path ahead of me and I am bouncing through deep grass and I have no idea where I am going I find a rock of my own to park on – and fall off of.

Of all the random events in my life, I will put near death by lightening that diverts us to the drinking hole of some Scots, Americans and a Bulgarian (who all are building a golf course in the area) who tell us that the hotels are over priced, but if we want 5 kms up the road there is a monastery that will take us in for the night, and that we then wake that monk up, who then lets us into the little place in back that Ed has declared `uninhabitable´ to sleep for the night, as number one on my list.
But they had a hot shower. And he charged us 2.50 to stay there. Even if they had the scariest bug I have seen outside of Japan.
And we heard, even though we did not see, rats.
Either that or that bug had a large family.
But given the other choice was to go back out into that storm, where I was literally screaming every time the lightening came closer and closer, it was preferable. (this is revenge for the time I made fun of John when he thought we would die in Japan.
Run Faster Sherrie We are going to die
