A propos de Alix

I was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada – where I once again live today. My downfall, I suppose, was attending a private school that taught me German as a second language from Kindergarten to 8th Grade. Due to a very odd speech impediment when I was a kid, I could speak German clearly, but not English and certainly not French (the second-language I was SUPPOSED to learn as a good Canadian).

I fell in love with the German language instead, and in my second year of university I went on a one-year exchange to Germany. It was there that I met an Acadian guy who would soon become my best friend, a Quebecois guy who would run a close second, and a Bermudian girl. It’s always easiest to visit foreign countries when you have a friend to stay with, and really, that has been my style of travel ever since the exchange ended.

It is slightly ironic that I ended up befriending French-Canadians through my study of the Germany-language. To this day, I have failed four times to learn French…but there is always hope for the future!

In 2005, I decided to do my Masters in history – and what better place to study than Newfoundland! I had never been there before and had no idea what to expect. Once again, I fell in love with a country (and it really is it’s own little country – even if it is part of Canada). A large portion of that love had to do with the wonderful people I met there, Sherrie (GypsyPrincess) being chief among them. She is now in Germany (another irony) and hopefully one day I will figure out how to make it back there visit her.

Meanwhile, my Acadian from New Brunswick is getting ready to teach English in China for the second time, and I’m saving up money so that this time I can visit him.
